Evaluating my music magazine
Now i have finished my music magazine i have picked to write out my evaluation on my blog.
Any music magazine of today you would see would have the key conventions of a large masthead that stands out to distinguish one magazine from another, they are usually bold and have a colour that is different or stands out from the rest of the text on the page so they don't merge together. There is most commonly a large, main image on the front cover, of a band or artist. There is usually a banner underneath the main picture telling you why they are the main music icon of this issue, and what's inside about them. There is always a strapline based on a competition this brings the reader in as they are in for a chance of winning something. The strapline is usually on the top of the magazine or at the bottom and is bold and stands out, sometimes evan a different colour font to the rest of the text. Magazines tend to use the word "exclusive" sometime they put it on a the strapline or in the banner, they used the word "exclusive" to show the audience that it's only in this magazine and you can't get it any where else. The cover lines contain information about articles or what you can find in the magazine of different pages, the pages numbers are usually highlighted so you can find the pages easy and quick. The colours based for a music magazine are based on the genre e.g. if it was a rock magazine there would most probably be dark red and black colours but if it's a pop magazine the colours would be pinks and bright colours they do this to relate and adapted to the audience. Overall everything on the front cover of a music magazine is important and placed there for a reason.
The typical contents page has the list of page numbers and whats on each page to make it easy for the reader to find a page without frustration. There will be a letter from the editor giving you a brief know about the magazine as a whole, the editor comes across as friendly and informal to the audience. A double page spread would usually involve an interview with a band or artist, advertisements, reviews.
In my own magazine i have used these conventions in the same way. I have made my masthead stand out by making it bold and outlined. I have used an un-ordinary font for my masthead so that you can identify it quickly, when placed with many others magazines. My magazine has a large main image in the centre of the front cover and a banner attached telling you why they are the main picture. I have font colours that are similar in genre but have a contrast when out together so each coverline stands out itself. My front cover has a strapline at the bottom of the page that is highlighted from the rest of the text, also it's advertising a competition. My colours are based around my genre of pop teenage girl and the colours run throughout the magazine, to keep the theme running through. I don't think i have pushed the boundaries with the front cover as i have not done anything that's not aloud. My contents page has a letter from the editor that is friendly and informal, i also have a list of the page numbers and a brief know about whats on the pages. I have images to show who and whats in the magazine to make the reader want to buy and read it. I also have brief coverlines of what else is inside (Issues special offer) but not placed as a page number. My double page spread has an interview which is most commonly used for a double page spread s you can fit much information in with seeing both pages at the same time. I have tryed to make my media magazine look as professional as possible to the genre and age i am targeting. My pictures i have tryed to make look as if they have been taking professionally as they would have been done for a normal music magazine.
I have represented the social group for young teenage girls, who are interested in pop music. I have represented this by using colours that the teenage girls will connect to e.g. pink purple and yellow, my questionnaire helped me pick the colours. I have used images of a pop girl band they look glamours and stylish and perfect as that's how they would be representing in a professional pop girl magazine. The language i have used is very informal as young teenage girls would talk in this way. I have used chatty and fun language to engage with the audience, also so they don't get bored of reading the magazine.I have used a similar amount of images to text so this breaks up the text as it can be seen as boring in young girls eyes as they don't want to read lots.
The institution i think best fits and would want my magazine would be NatMag as they also have cosmopolitan which is a girl based magazine. They would want my magazine as it's different there isn't one like it on the market.
The age of the audience/readers for my magazine will be 13-16 female girls, this is shown by the colours and language of the magazine, and whats advertised in it. Also the magazine can be read by people who are generally interested in pop music. Also they will be interested in fashion as its a girl magazine fashion tips have been added to give an edge on the magazine. The audience will also like to share what they have read to other fans.
I included bright, eye catching colours to attracted the audience eye, the bright pink would attracted a teenage girls eyes and would make them want to buy the magazine. I used a bright large picture as my main picture on my front cover to make the audience see who is being involved in the magazine. Also i have used large text so you can see the short snappy coverlines when you are browsing through the different magazines. I used bold icons to make certain things stand out like "FREE CD" as this will make the customers wont to buy the magazine as they have seen theres something free available.
To create my magazine, i have used many different technologies, first of all i have used a blog which i have never used before i have learnt how to upload, edit on my blog. I used publisher as a base for my final constructing, i used it lay out all my different pieces and piece my front cover, contents page and double page spread. I used gimp to improve the quality of my pictures that i had taken myself, i used the smudge tool to take away any dirty marks on the wall and the electrical plug. I used the filter-lighting tool to add an effect of light coming from the top left hand side, this made the main front cover photo look more glamours. I used the contrast tool to make my picture for the contents page black and white to have a contrast in colour of pictures. I used a professional camera to take my photos for the first time i learnt of to put a timer on it so me and my models could re-arrange theself's to stand in situated places. I have learnt how to use a poll as i used one in my blog it was a very successful outcome and a successful type of research.
From the preliminary task to make my final designs, i have learnt to put more of my own ideas in rather than from existing magazines. I have learnt how to use more of a wider range of technologies. I have learnt about making my practical work look more professional as i have been progressing. Also what appeals to my target market e.g. glamours photos.
I have also learnt that the standard of the images taken has to be very high as the pictures play a big role and the magazine will not look professional as a whole. Also i have learnt more about what the target audience would like and what they are interested in, also what to put on my magazine and what not to.

Photo Shoot plan
For my photo shoot, i am using a plain white background, so the models will stand out. I will be using three lights, one in the centre and two at each side. I will take many pictures to pick which photo i prefer more, i will experiment with different coloured filters to see the effects if i like them or not. For the front cover picture it will be a mid close up shot of three girls (new pop girl band). They will all be wearing similar clothes to show they all connect together. For the contents page i will be taking pictures of fashion items, for cover lines also more pictures of the models in different angles and shots.I will be looking at different pictures of three grouped girl bands to look at different shots and angles.

Front cover-
Mix mag is aimed at (target market) old teenagers who are interested in DJ/club. There is only 2 pictures on the front cover with one of them a mid-shot, this is the main picture of David Guetta, underneath his face there is a pun "Guetta load of this!" with the colour of the text contrasting to his clothes to stand out. The colour of text is yellow and white, the yellow can be compared to being neon which resembles club. The feature of there being a free mix CD make you want to buy the magazine more attracted you to it. With the background being very basic it makes everything else stand out. The features in the corner want to make you read the magazine as you may like the featured artists. The word "FEATURING" stands out as its bold and in capital letters. The spiky bubble text box stands out, they have made this stand out to show its the last one this year. Certain words are highlighted to show the importance of them .

Textual Anaylsis- Top of the pops
Top of the pops magazine is targeted at teenage girls, and the genre of music is pop. There is a strong brand identity with the colours of the magazine being pink and there having many popstars on the front cover distinguishes the magazine from others. The mast head runs along the top but isn't very noticeable as Cheryl's head covers the middle part but the main words are showing "top & pops". As this magazine is targeted at young teenage girls the designers do not wont to make it boring and put bullet pointed coverlines, so they have done the coverlines in bubbles, text boxes and pictures. At the bottom of the front cover there is a strapline/coverline with it showing that there are 6 hot posters inside with the graphics next to it giving a preview of what they are also they are in a pink textbox, like all the other texts. The font on the front cover and through out the magazine changes to what the writer is talking about. The font is connected to the genre of age as its different and stands out, and also is more appealing to read. There are 2 based colours which are white and pink these to have a comparison as when one is on top of another one stands out. Abbreviations are used "OMG!" this relates to the mode of address as its young teenagers they talk in this way. There are many lures on the front cover showing what is inside the magazine and the page numbers, the lure can be used to make the customer want to read more and buy it. There is a lure with members of the jls band, "JLS SIGNED HOODIE" the quote i have pasted is in a different font this could show that the offer of a jls hoodie is exclusive and different. The mid-close up shot of Cherly is the main picture in the centre of the page, the colour of her top is white which connects with the white and pink theme. Speech bubbles are used to add entertainment as the editor has made humor to the celebrities.
Contents page-
For top of the pops there was not a contents page so i picked a page that has features of a contents page. The features of a contents page would be that there is a text box about the BBC, a "Meet the TOTP magazine team". There is not a theme of pink and white its white and yellow. The features of a contents page are in a purple textbox this stands out as its important information. The headline shows the byline of who wrote it which was "Dick & Dom". There is no hybird as its all one genre, (young teenage pop). The mode of address is chattyy, informal and entertaining, they use this type of mode of address to connect to the audience. Cropping pictures is very common, as you can crop the picture to a certain size and certain parts, they use this with the "hot bod" man. The layout, is a copy and simailar to a contents page. Graphics have been used with spiltting an image to show the spilt in there relationship. There are competitions at the top to win makeup, this is a feature of maybe a contents page.
Double page spread-
The double page spread i have picked to anaylsis is a double page spread that im thinkng of doing in my own magazine. The double page spread is of an interview with a picture of "Robert Pattinson" this picture of him takes a whole page but is spread over both pages with the background of the picture being behind the text. There is a yellow text box running along the bottom on each page showing that the two pages are connected together. There are stars in between each letter "R*O*B*E*R*T" these could show that he is famous. The stars continue on each page with the pink and yellow theme. The interview that taken place has been layed out into columes. The grapics for the word "vote" the v is in a form of a tick they have done this because the tick means vote. The layout of this page is that the texts boxes overlapp to push everything in. This peice of writting is aimed at an audience who like hot new actors so putting it in this magazine is a particullar good choice. There is a caption were a picture has been taken with pattinson knowing and a text box with writting about it this adds humour for the audience.

Textual Anaylsis

(Kerrang!)
Front Cover-
Kerrang! The title of kerrang sounds like a guitar this connects to what the music magazine is based around, the target market would be people who are into rock. The front cover for Kerrang is based with red and black colours. The masthead is in a different font to the rest of the text and stands out as its white text behind a black background. The main focus of the picture is the man in the center of the magazine, this is a mid close up shot with his shoulders in shot. The main picture connects with the cover line as the man in this picture is from guns n'roses. All the text is in capitals this makes it easier to read, also stands out. There is a red theme on the front cover with little parts of white the white stands out and empathises the main parts. The circle with the the price overlapping the masthead is eye catching as when you read the masthead it overlaps and catches your eye. There are coverlines at the bottom left hand side which are not very eye catching but if your interested you will read everything. There is a PLUS sign so this will catch your eye to read it. The barcode is in the corner for convience to scan. There is a strap line with competitions on winning a signed guitar. There are dashs of red around the magazine in important places these dahs of ed catch your eye therfore, your eyes scan all the main aspects of the front cover of the magazine.
